A legal decision involving a divorcing husband and wife and the respective responsibilities each of them will have for the care of their children. Typically, both parents maintain permanent homes for the children, and the children live with each for relatively equal amounts of time. Joint custody can also refer to an arrangement whereby the child lives with one parent most of the time, although the other parent has an equal say in important decisions regarding upbringing.
