A component of criminal justice policy involving guidelines and established procedures to be considered when deciding how to cope with the illegal conduct of minors. Elements of current U.S. juvenile justice policy include giving the juvenile the same legal rights to trial and counsel granted to adults, incarceration in facilities that are segregated from adult institutions, shorter sentences, clearing the record after a specified period of good behavior, and an orientation that tries to be more therapeutic than punitive.
