Krankenkassen

In Germany, the "sick fund." This program, originating informally in German localities in the 1850s, was based on money collected from voluntary public contributions, churches, employers, and employees to be set aside for those unable to work because of illness. The organization of this program was later modified and incorporated into Germany's national health care program, established in 1883. See also Hilfskassen.
