latent homosexual

A term sometimes applied to an individual who believes himself or herself to have a heterosexual orientation but who has unconscious desires for erotic gratification with members of the same sex. Latent homosexuals may be in deep conflict about their sexual orientation and expend great psychic energy in denying to themselves and others that such conflicts exist. Such denial might take the form of overt hostility toward people who are gay or lesbian, avoidance of them, or avoidance of any behaviors that seem more appropriate for members of the opposite sex.
