தன் வயதொத்த, சமமான கல்வி, அறிவாற்றல் கொண்ட ஒருவரைவிட, படிப்பதிலும், எழுதுவதிலும், கணக்கிடலிலும் போதுமான திறனில்லா, பின் தங்கியிருக்கும் நிலை. இது தன்னம்பிக்கையின்மையாலோ, ஊக்கமின்மையாலோ, கலாச்சாரக் காரணங்களாலோ, எதையும் எதிர்க்கின்ற, ஐயப்படுகின்ற (defiant disorder) மனப்பான்மையாலோ, வேறு வெளிப்படையாகத் தெரியக்கூடிய மனக்குழப்பங்களாலோ, கவனக்குறைவாலோ, மிகை இயக்கக் கோளாறாலோ (hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), மனத்தளர்ச்சியாலோ (depressive disorder), சலிப்புடனிருத்தலாலோ (dysthymic disorder) ஏற்படலாம்.

A level of achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics that is substantially below that expected for age, education, and intelligence. The condition may be related to low self-esteem, discouragement, cultural factors, or other diagnosable mental disorders, especially conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), major depressive disorder, or dysthymic disorder. Learning disorders were formerly called "academic skills disorder."
