கடன் வாங்கியவர் சொத்து அல்லது உடமைகளின் மீது கடன் கொடுத்தவருக்கு உள்ள பாத்தியதை. கடனைச் திருப்பிச் செலுத்தமுடியாத போது அந்தச் சொத்தோ, உடமைகளோ விற்கப்பட்டு அல்லது ஏலத்தில் விடப்பட்டு கடன் தீர்க்கப்படவேண்டும் என்ற நடைமுறை. இந்த மாதிரியான உரிமை அல்லது பாத்தியதை பலவகைப்படும் 1. வரி பாத்தியதை - எந்தச் சொத்தின் மீது வரி நிலுவையில் உள்ளதோ அந்த சொத்து ஏலத்தில் விடப்பட்டு வரிக்கு ஈடு செய்யப்படும். 2. வாடகை பாத்தியதை (வாடகை செலுத்தத் தவறும்போது குடியிருந்தவரின் உடமைகளை ஏலம் விட்டு வாடகை நிலுவையை ஈடு செய்வது 3. இயந்திர பாத்தியதை (தொழிற்சாலைகள் கடன் திருப்பிச் செலுத்த முடியாத போது இயந்திரங்கள் அல்லது பொருட்களின் மீது பாத்தியதை கொள்வது).

A claim on some property placed there to secure payment of a debt. Until the lien is cleared, the property holder risks having the property sold to pay the debt if payment terms are not followed. Also, when such property is sold, the lien holder is usually entitled to debt repayment before any of the remaining funds go to the property holder. Specific types of lien in- clude tax liens (levied by states and federal governments against properties held by tax avoiders); landlords' liens (against furniture and other goods of tenants who damaged property or failed to pay rents); and mechanics' liens (against buildings, automobiles, or equipment as a security for work and materials performed thereon).
