line-item veto

The action of a nation's chief executive to exclude a portion of a spending bill that the legislative bodies have passed. The executive rules out that portion of the total bill (by crossing a line through the rejected budget item and initialing the line). This action would presumably enable the overall budget to be implemented without having to include all the minor attachments that individual legislators have added to the budget proposal.
