பதட்டமடக்கிகள் மனப்பதட்டதை / அழுத்தத்தைக் குறைத்து மனதை சாந்தப்படுத்துபவை. இதனுடைய மருத்துவப் பெயர் anxiolytics (படபடப்பைத் தீர்ப்பது) மற்றும் antipsychotics (மனக்குழப்ப / உளப்பிணி நீக்கி) என்பதாகும். மருத்துவர்களின் பரிந்துரையின் பேரில் எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்படும் இம்மருந்துகள், மனச் சிதைவு, மனப்பிறழ்வு, மனப்பிரமை, மனஅழுத்தத்தை முற்றிலும் குணப்படுத்த முடியாவிட்டாலும், அதன் தாக்கத்தை / அறிகுறிகளை பெருமளவு குறைக்க உதவுகிறது. இந்த மருந்துகளை எடுத்துக்கொள்வதால் உலர்ந்த வாய், மயக்க நிலை, சுவாசக்கோளாறுகள், உடலெடை அதிகரித்தல், உடலசைப்பதில் சிரமம் (tardive dyskinesia) போன்ற பக்கவிளைவுகள் ஏற்படும். இப்பதட்டமடக்கிகள் பல்வேறு வர்த்தகப் பெயர்களில் பினோதியசின் அடங்கிய Thorazine, Mellaril, Compazine, Stelazine, Trilafon, Prolixin, Vesprin, Sparine, Largactil, வேறு இரசாயனக் கலவைகள் கொண்ட Haldol, Serpasil, Moderil, Harmonyl, Navane, Taractan, Raudixin, Moban, and Loxitane பெயர்களில் கிடைக்கிறது

An antipsychotic medication prescribed by physicians to reduce, in people with schizophrenia or other psychoses, symptoms of severe anxiety and hallucination. In the mid-1950s, these drugs were found to be successful in reducing psychotic symptoms but not in curing the psychosis itself. Side effects include dry mouth, drugged feeling, respiratory problems, weight gain, and tardive dyskinesia (TD). Trade names for some major tranquilizers include the phenothiazine derivatives such as Thorazine, Mellaril, Compazine, Stelazine, Trilafon, Prolixin, Vesprin, Sparine, and Largactil. Other major tranquilizers with slightly different chemical composition include Haldol, Serpasil, Moderil, Harmonyl, Navane, Taractan, Raudixin, Moban, and Loxitane.
