English

The theory proposed in the 19th century by English economist Thomas R. Malthus (1766-1834) stating that populations will increase in geometric ratio (2-4-8-16-32, and so on), whereas food supplies and other necessities can only increase in arithmetic ratios (2-34-5, and so on). According to the theory, this will lead to overpopulation problems unless populations are controlled by war, natural disasters, or sexual restraint. This theory was used, in part, to justify the sufferings of poor people, especially at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.
