தம்பதிகளுக்கான ஆலோசனை என்பதும் குடும்பச் சிகிச்சையும் ஒன்றென்று கருதுபவர்களும், தம்பதிகளுக்கான ஆலோசனை என்பது தீவிரத்தன்மையற்ற குறைவான பிரச்சனைகளுடைய, நேரடியாகப் பிரச்சனைகளை விவாதிக்கக் கூடிய தம்பதிகளுக்கானது என்று அதை குடும்பச் சிகிச்சையிலிருந்து வேறுபடுத்தி இரண்டிற்குமுள்ள மெல்லிய வேறுபாட்டை சுட்டிக்காட்டுபவர்களும் உண்டு. இருப்பினும் இந்த வேறுபாடுகள் ஆய்வு மூலமாக உறுதி செய்யப்படவில்லை. ஆகையால் தம்பதிகளை சமாதானப்படுத்தும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டுள்ள சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் பிறநிபுணர்கள், தங்கள் பணியைக் குடும்பச் சிகிச்சை என்று அழைக்க விருபுவதற்குக் காரணம், ஆலோசனை என்பதைவிட சிகிச்சை என்பது விரிவானதும், தத்துவார்த்த பின்புலம் கொண்டதாகவும், பல அணுகுமுறைகளையும் உத்திகளையும் கையாளக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பளிப்பதாகவும் கருதுகிறார்கள்.

A form of marital therapy. Many professionals consider the term "marriage counseling" to be synonymous with "marital therapy." Others believe that "counseling" is less intense and more directive and deals with couples who may be less troubled. Existing empirical research has not yet clearly demonstrated significant differences between the two. Nevertheless, many social workers and other professionals who treat couples prefer the term "marital therapy" because they believe it conveys a more technical and sophisticated repertoire of techniques and has a more theoretical and professional orientation.
