The Social Security Administration (SSA) limit on the amount of benefit it will pay to a retired or disabled worker and his or her dependents. If the total benefits due exceed the amount of the MFB, the worker's benefits are paid in full, but a dependent's benefits are reduced proportionately. MFB amounts are usually equal to 150 percent to 180 percent of the workers primary insurance amount (PIA).
