Medicaid

The means-tested program established in 1965 that provides payment for hospital and medical services to people who cannot afford them. Funding comes from federal and state governments under the auspices of the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA). In most areas, administration of the program is handled through local public assistance offices. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients may also be helped with Medicaid applications in their local social security offices.
