நோய்வாய்ப்பட்ட ஒருவருக்கு அவரின் உண்மையான நோயைத் தெரிவிக்கும் பட்சத்தில், நோயாளி மனமுடைந்து போவார் என்றோ, வேறு பிரச்சனைகளுக்கு அது இட்டுச் செல்லும் என்று உணரும்போதோ, அந்த நோயின் பெயரை உபயோகிக்காமல், அதற்கு இணையான பதட்டப்பட வைக்காத இன்னொரு நோயின் பெயரைக் குறிப்பிடுவது. உதாரணமாக இருமுனை உளப்பிறழ்வால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டவரிடம், அவர் உணர்வுக் கோளாறால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதாகத் தெரிவித்தல். இது ஒரு தொழிலின் நெறிமுறைகளுக்கு மாறானது.

The ethically suspect practice by some social workers and other professionals of deliberately misdiagnosing a client on the supposed grounds that the appropriate label will lead to serious difficulties for the client or that the new, more gentle diagnosis will avoid those difficulties. For example, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder is replaced by one of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
