A form of treatment and rehabilitation for people with social and mental disorders who usually live in institutional settings. Treatment is not restricted to individual hours with a professional therapist but also occurs in the total environment of this closed setting, which is also referred to as the "therapeutic community." Those being treated attend group sessions for everyone in the facility, elect their own leaders, and provide one another with social and emotional support throughout the day. The entire environment is considered vital to the treatment process.
