மனநோய்களைப் பல்வேறு கோணங்களிலிருந்து மதிப்பீடு செய்ய, மன நோய்களைக் கண்டறிய உதவும் புள்ளி விபரக் கையேட்டில் (நான்காம் பதிப்பில்) கையாளப்படும் முறை. இந்த முறையில் ஒவ்வொரு மனநோயாளியும், அவரின் நோயும் ஐந்து கோணங்களில் கவனிக்கப்படவேண்டும். கோணம் I. மருத்துவர் கவனத்தில் கொள்ளவேண்டிய மருத்துவக் கோளாறுகள் மற்றும் பிற (உடல்நலத்) தன்மைகள் - கோணம் II. ஆளுமைக்கோளாறுகள் மற்றும் மன வளர்ச்சியின்மை - கோணம் III . பொது மருத்துவ நிலை - கோணம் IV. நோயாளியின் சமூக உளவியல் மற்றும் சுற்றுச் சூழலில் உள்ள பிரச்சனைகள் - கோணம் V. நோயாளியின் செயல்பாடுகளைப் பற்றிய முழுமையான மதிப்பீடு.

The system used in the DSM-IV for assessing types of mental disorder on five axes, each of which refers to a different domain of information about the client: (1) Axis I, clinical disorders and other conditions that may be a focus of clinical attention; (2) Axis II, personality disorders and mental retardation; (3) Axis III, general medical conditions; (4) Axis IV, psychosocial and environmental problems; and (5) Axis V, global assessment of functioning.
