muscular dystrophy

A progressive disease of the skeletal muscles that usually begins in early childhood. In some forms, patients are confined to wheelchairs by the time they reach adolescence. Early manifestations of the disease include progressive muscular weakness, waddling gait, coordination problems, and sometimes learning disorder and mental retardation. Causes are not well established for all types, but in many male victims it is an inherited disease, passed on through the mother.
