The organization established in 1979 as the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill to advocate for more comprehensive mental health research and health insurance parity in coverage for physical disorders and to coordinate the activities of many foundations involved in mental health research. The organization was established primarily by family members of people with mental illness who wanted to change the then widely held view that family members were the primary or sole cause of the person's illness. NAMI then focused on reducing the stigma of mental illness and psychiatric disorder and on helping eliminate discrimination and restrictions on access to essential treatment. NAMI emphasizes the neurobiological basis of mental illness and usually refers to such illness as brain disorder. Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, NAMI has nearly 200,000 members and 1,100 affiliate groups, with chapters in every state.
