A federation of social welfare agencies in the public and private sectors, including secular and religious agencies, as well as individuals concerned about the social welfare of Americans. Established in 1879 as the Conference of Charities, it changed its name to the National Confer- ence on Charities and Corrections in 1884, to the National Conference of Social Work in 1917, and to its last name in 1957. NCSW suspended operations gradually in the 1980s.
