The advocacy and educational organization founded in 1899 to protect those who make, sell, purchase, or use products or provide and use services. In its early years, it was led by social worker-lawyer Florence Kelley (1859-1932) and philanthropist Josephine Shaw Lowell (1843-1904) and successfully fought for improved working conditions, child labor laws, a minimum wage, shorter working hours, and safe and effective consumer products.
