சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் தங்களுக்குள்ளே கருத்துக்களை பரிமாறிக்கொள்ளவும், வேலைவாய்ப்புத் தகவல்களைப் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ளவும், சமூக நடவடிக்கைகளைப் பற்றிப் பேசவும், வரையறைகள் ஏதுமில்லாமல் 1910 ஆம் ஆண்டு தொடங்கி 1920 வரை பத்தாண்டுகள் தொடர்ந்து சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் இயல்பாகக் கூடி கலந்தாலோசனை செய்துகொண்ட சந்திப்புக்கள். இதுவே பின்னர் சம்பிரதாய சந்திப்புக்களாகி, 1921 ஆம் ஆண்டில் அமெரிக்க சமூகப்பணியாளர் சங்கமாக உருப்பெற்றது. பின்னர் 1955 இல் இந்த அமைப்பே தேசிய சமூகப்பணியாளர் சம்மேளனமாக் மாறியது.

An early social work organization that began informally in various cities in the 1910- 1920 decade to provide central gathering points for the exchange of ideas, job information, and social cause actions. The exchange grew more formal and in 1921 was organized as the American Association of Social Workers (AASW), which merged into the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in 1955.
