வேலை இழந்ததாலோ, வேறு வகையான பொருளாதாரப் பிரச்சனைகளாலோ, வாழ்க்கைத் தரத்தை, வசதிகளைக் கணிசமாக இழந்து வறியவர்களானவர்கள். வறுமைக்கோட்டிற்கு மேலிருந்து மீண்டும் வறியவர்களானவர்கள். இவர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் நடுத்தர வர்க்க மதிப்பீடுகளையும், ஒழுங்கு முறைகளையும் கடைப்பிடிப்பவர்களாக இருப்பார்கள் என்பது சமூகவியலாளர்கள் மற்றும் பொருளியலாளர்களின் கணிப்பு. இவர்கள் புதுப்பணக்காரர்களை விட வித்தியாசமானவர்கள். பொருளாதார ரீதியாக உயர்ந்தாலும், புதுப்பணக்காரர்களில் பலர் அற்பகுணம் படைத்தவர்களாகவும், வசதியற்ற வாழ்க்கை கொடுத்த அனுபவங்களிலிருந்து மீளமுடியாதவர்களாகவும் இருப்பார்கள்.

People who have recently become impoverished or have had significant reductions in their living standards as a result of job loss or other economic problems. Some sociologists and economists consider these people different from other poor people in that they tend to share the values and backgrounds of middle-class people. New poor could be said to be the opposite of "nouveau riche" people who have recently become more affluent but continue to hold the values and backgrounds of less affluent people.
