nominal measurement

The lowest level of measurement used by researchers, consisting simply of classifying observations into categories (for example, gender, race, religion, and so on) that must be mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. Appropriate statistics for nominal-level variables include chi-square, phi, lambda, and contingency coefficients.
