சில அறிகுறிகள் நோய் இருப்பதை உறுதி செய்யப் போதுமானதாக இருந்தாலும், அந்த அறிகுறிகளின் தன்மையை வைத்து, முன்னரே கண்டறியப்பட்டு அட்டவனைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட நோய்களில் ஒன்றென வகைப்படுத்த முடியாத நிலையை வேறுவகையில் குறிப்பிடமுடியாத நோய்கள் என்கிறார்கள். எங்கும் குறிப்பிடப்படாதவை (not elsewhere specified (NES) என்றும் சொல்வதுண்டு. உதாரணமாக அறிகுறிகளைக்கொண்டு மனநிலைக் கோளாறு (mood disorder) என்று கண்டறியப்பட்டாலும், அதை வகைப்படுத்தமுடியாத மனநிலைக் கோளாறு என்று குறித்தால், அது உணர்ச்சி நிலையின்மை சீர்கேடா (affective lability), மிகை மன அழுத்தமா (depression) அல்லது இருமுனை மனப்பிறழ்வா (Bi polar disorder) என்று கண்டறிய முடியவில்லை என்று பொருள்.

"Not otherwise specified." The NOS abbreviation may appear after use of a general diagnostic label to indicate that the presenting symptoms or available information do not permit further delineation about the disorder. For example, a mood disorder NOS diagnosis would suggest affective lability but not indicate whether depression or bipolar episodes predominate.
