அமைப்புக் கோட்பாட்டின் படி, வெளியிலிருந்து வரும் உள்ளீடுகளை (கருத்துக்களை) ஏற்றுக்கொண்டு, சூழ்நிலைக்கு ஏற்ப தன்னை மாற்றிக்கொள்ளும் தன்மைகொண்ட அமைப்புக்களைத் திறந்த அல்லது வெளிப்படையான அமைப்புகள் என்பர். எடுத்துக்காட்டாக திறந்த அல்லது வெளிப்படையான குடும்ப அமைப்பில், அக்குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் வெளியாருடன் பழகவும், அவர்களிடமிருந்து கற்றுக்கொண்டதை வைத்து தங்கள் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் ஒருவருக்கொருவர் கொள்ளும் தொடர்பாடல்களில் சில மாற்றங்களை அனுமதிக்கும் தன்மையைக் குறிக்கும். திறந்த அமைப்பு என்பது உயிருள்ள அமைப்புகளுக்குத்தான் பொருந்தும். உயிரற்ற, இயந்திரமயமான அமைப்புகளுக்கு இந்தக் கருத்தாக்கம் பொருந்தாது.

In systems theories, a system that accepts input from outside and is amenable to change based on conditions in the environment. For example, an open family system is structured so that its members can become involved with outsiders, bringing them and their ideas into the family unit to effect some changes in the way the family interrelates. The open system concept is generally applied to living systems rather than nonliving or mechanical ones. See also closed system.
