organic mental disorders

Mental disturbances thought to be caused by permanent or temporary damage to the brain. The disorders may be related to the aging process, to the ingestion of toxic substances such as alcohol and other drugs, or to certain physiological dysfunctions. This term and category have been eliminated as a diagnosis from the DSM-IV, because it implies that other disorders do not have an organic basis.
