ஒரு குழந்தை கர்பத்திலிருக்கும் போதோ, பிறக்கும் போதோ, பிறந்தபின்னோ அல்லது ஒரு குழந்தையைச் சுவீகாரம் எடுக்கும் போதோ அல்லது எடுத்தபின்னோ அந்தக் குழந்தையை கவனித்துக்கொள்ள பெற்றோர் (தாய் தந்தை) இருவருக்கும் அவர்கள் வசதிக்கேற்பக் கொடுக்கப்படும் விடுமுறை. இது குழந்தைகளைக் கவனித்துக் கொள்ள பெண்களுக்கு வழங்கப்படும் பேறுகால விடுப்பைப் போன்றது. இப்பொழுது இந்த வசதியும், உரிமையும் சுவீகாரப் பெற்றோருக்கும் பல நாடுகளில் நீட்டிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

An employment policy of granting a mother or father time off before, during, or after a child's birth or adoption. This leave may be granted to one or both natural or adoptive parents (partly to facili- tate the neonatal bonding process). Parental leave policies were established after there was some acceptance of maternity leave, when it was recognized that fathers and adoptive parents and their children have essentially the same rights and needs as do new mothers and their infants.
