மரணத்தை எதிர்கொண்டிருக்கும் நோயாளியின் விருப்பத்திற்கிணங்க, அவருக்கு உயிர்காக்க அளிக்கப்பட்ட சிகிச்சையை நிறுத்தி, அவர் இயல்பாக மரிக்க உதவுவது. இது தீராத நோயினால் அவதிப்படும் ஒருவர் தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்ளத் தீர்மானித்த பின்பு, அவருக்குத் தேவையான உதவியையும், தகவல்களையும் தந்துதவும் செயல் போன்றதல்ல. இது கருணைக் கொலையுமல்ல. மாறாகத் தேவையற்று வாழ்நாளை நீட்டிக்கவேண்டாம் என்ற நோயாளியின் விருப்பமறிந்து இயல்பாக மரிக்க உதவுவது.

The withdrawal of life supports to a patient with terminal illness, usually following the use of the patient's prestated wishes, as in a living will or advanced directive. This process is not considered synonymous with physician- assisted suicide. In passive euthanasia the withdrawal of supports does not cause the death but submits to the natural process of dying.
