A formal and sometimes legally mandated association of people who are members of one profession, brought together to evaluate the work of other members of that profession in accomplishing a specific set of tasks or objectives. The evaluation is commonly done by reviewing the professional's case records to determine if the type of treatment plan, methods, and outcome are commensurate with the organization's objectives and the client's needs. The U.S. government has required the establishment of PROs in hospitals and nursing homes that receive federal funds to oversee the administration of the diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) system.
