petit larceny

Larceny that involves goods of relatively small value. Each jurisdiction legislates the amount that determines whether a theft is petit (or petty) or grand larceny. In most states, that cutoff amount is usually between $50 and $500. The punishment for petit larceny tends to be much less than for grand larceny.
