The human services intervention that emphasizes the use of photographs, film, videotapes, and other graphic depictions to help clients achieve greater understanding about themselves and their world and to express themselves artistically. Phototherapy is often used in conjunction with other forms of psychotherapy to achieve these goals. The International Phototherapy Association (IPA), founded in 1981, promotes the use of this method, facilitates professional interactions, encourages training, and disseminates information.
