An inert preparation that is made to appear identical to or presented to patients as an active drug. When used in research that is double blind, the investigator tests the effectiveness of a drug by giving it to half the subjects and the placebo to the others. Sometimes placebos are also given to patients who apparently do not need an active drug but who seek the attention or secondary gain that comes from using one. A physical effect based on an individual's belief that the inactive substance is working is called a "placebo effect." The term used in most English speaking nations outside the United States is "dummy."
