குற்றம் சாட்டப்பட்டவர் அல்லது அவரது வழக்கறிஞருக்கும் அக்குற்றத்தின் மீது வழக்கு தொடுக்கும் வழக்கறிஞருக்கும், இடையே நடக்கும் பேரம். குற்றவாளி தன்னுடைய குற்றம் அனைத்தையுமோ அல்லது அதன் ஒருசில கூறுகளையோ ஒப்புக்கொள்ளும் பட்சம், வழக்கு விசாரணையின் கடுமையைத் தவிர்த்து குறைந்த பட்சத் தண்டனையோடு தப்பித்துக்கொள்ள இதனால் வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும். மன்றாட்டுப் பேரம் கடுமையான தண்டனையிலிருந்தும், தர்மசங்கடமான வழக்கு விசாரணையிலிருந்தும் குற்றவாளி தப்பிக்க உதவலாம். இதன் மூலம் நீதிமன்ற விசாரணையைச் சீக்கிரமாக முடிக்க முடிவதால், வழக்குகள் நீதிமன்றத்தில் தேங்கிக்கிடக்கும் நிலை வெகுவாகக் குறையும்.

Negotiation between a prosecuting attorney and a person accused of a crime (and his or her defense counsel), resulting in a disposition of the case. Typically, the accused agrees to plead guilty to a lesser charge and forgoes a jury trial. The advantage to the accused person is that the case is resolved sooner and at less risk of serious penalty. The advantages to the public are that court dockets are less backlogged and cases can be resolved with less cost.
