The 1896 U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a state law permitting segregation of the races in public transportation. The ruling, which was extended to other public places, held that segregation was permissible under the Constitution as long as "separate but equal" facilities existed. The ruling was not reversed until the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education.
