The reproductive state of carrying a fetus within the body; that is, the time between conception and birth. Human pregnancy normally lasts about 280 days, during which time rapid changes in the development of the fetus occur in the mother's uterus. Determining the existence of pregnancy may be based on observation of certain symptoms. Physicians use three categories of pregnancy criteria: (1) presumptive symptoms include failure to experience the anticipated menstrual period, nausea or vomiting ("morning sickness"), fatigue and need for excessive sleep, frequent urination, alteration of skin pigmentation around the nipples, and softening of the cervix; (2) probable symptoms include positive results of laboratory tests for pregnancy (urine sampling for the presence of a specific level of the hormone chorionic gonadotropin), abdominal enlargement, and uterine changes; (3) positive signs include fetal heartbeat, fetal movements within the uterus, and the presence of a fetal skeleton as shown by X-ray. It is important to determine the existence of pregnancy fairly soon after conception and to determine the relative health of the fetus. See also amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS).
