In the diagnosis or assessment of a psychiatric or other medical condition, the period before the criteria of the disorder are fully met but during which some signs or symptoms of the disorder have begun to appear. According to Janet B.W. Williams (personal correspondence), "the prodrome can only be determined definitively in retrospect, after the full criteria for the disorder have been met."
