The social workers are usually employed by the local Department of Social Services (DSS) or a similar agency, or they may work with the courts or law enforcement agencies. The primary job is to investigate situations in which a person may be at risk (as in child abuse or neglect of a disabled person), to help ameliorate the situation, to minimize further risk, and to find and facilitate alternative placements and resources for the person at risk.
