தனிநபர்கள், குடும்பங்கள் மற்றும் சமுதாயப் பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்க, சமூகப்பணியாளர் மேற்கொள்ளும் சமூக உளவியல் மதிப்பீட்டிற்குத் தொடர்புடைய தகவல்களைச் சேகரிக்கும் முயற்சியை / ஆய்வை சமூக உளவியல் ஆய்வு என்று சொல்லலாம். இந்த ஆய்வில் சமூகஉளவியல் மதிப்பீட்டில் உள்ளடங்கிய தகவல்கள் சேகரிக்கப்படும். மேலும் ஒரு வாடிக்கையாளர் அவருடைய கண்ணோட்டதில் தெரிவித்த பிரச்சனைகளும், அந்தப் பிரச்சனைகளை உறுதிப்படுத்தத் தேவையான ஆதாரங்களான மருத்துவ அறிக்கைகள், வாடிக்கையாளரின் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் மற்றும் தொடர்புடைய நிறுவனங்களில் நேரடியாகவோ, தொலைபேசி மூலமாகவோ சேகரிக்கப்பட்ட கருத்துக்கள், வாடிக்கையாளரின் இனம் சார்ந்த பண்பாடு, அவர் வாழும் சூழ்நிலை, அவருக்கு உதவி செய்ய யாரை அல்லது எந்த மாதிரியான வாய்ப்புகளைப் பயன்படுத்திக்கொள்ளலாம் போன்ற தகவல்களை சேகரிப்பதை சமூக உளவியல் ஆய்வு என்று சொல்லலாம்

The social worker's process of acquiring the relevant information needed to decide on and develop a rational plan for helping the client (an individual, family, group, or community). This information may include the client's description of the problem; corroboration from other sources (such as medical records, school and personnel files, letters, telephone communication, and direct meetings with the client's family members and others who know the client); psychosocial history taking; information about the client's cultural and subcultural groups; information about the environment in which the client lives; and information about resources that might be used to help the client. The information obtained in the psychosocial study is used in arriving at the psychosocial assessment.
