பருவமடைதல் சடங்குகள்

பெண்ணும் ஆணும் பருவ வயதடைந்ததை ஒவ்வொரு சமூகமும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமாக எதிர்கொள்கிறது. குறிப்பாக பெண் பால்முதிர்ச்சி அடைந்து முதல் மாதப்போக்கினைக் கண்டதை விழாவாக்கிக் கொண்டாடும் சடங்குகள் எல்லாச் சமூகத்திலும் செய்யப்படுகின்றன. தமிழ்நாட்டில் இதைப் பூப்புனித நீராட்டு விழா என்றழைக்கின்றனர். இச்சடங்குகளும் விழா முறைகளும் மதம், சாதி, வாழ்நிலை, வர்க்கம், இனம் சார்ந்து வேறுபடுகின்றன. சில சமூகங்களில் ஆண்களுக்கும் இத்தகைய சடங்குகள் நடத்தப்படுவதுண்டு. இச்சடங்குகளின் முக்கிய நோக்கம் வயதிற்கு வந்துவிட்ட ஆணும் பெண்ணும், இன்னும் குழந்தைதனமாக நடந்துகொள்ளாமல் சமூக எதிர்பார்ப்புகளுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு நடை, உடை பாவனைகளை மாற்றிக்கொண்டு பொறுப்புடன் நடந்துகொள்ள அறிவுறுத்த செய்யப்படுகிறது.

Formal or informal socially institutionalized behaviors applied to or required of youngsters to mark their newly established biological reproductive capability. In some cultures, these behaviors are formal and ceremonial, such as requiring the youngster to start wearing "adult" clothing or to spend the night alone in the forest. Many puberty rites exist in the United States today, but they are informal and vary greatly among subcultural groups. Examples include beginning to wear makeup, smoke, drink, drive, or have sexual intercourse.
