public defender

An attorney for people who are accused of crimes or require legal services but are unable to pay for their own counsel. Public defender systems exist in most states largely as a result of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Gideon v. Wainwright that indigent defendants must be furnished with legal representation.
