The federal organization under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to initiate and coordinate the nation's effort to maintain and improve the health and health care of its people. The service is involved in improving sanitation and health education, facilitating primary prevention, setting and enforcing standards for food and drug processing and handling, investigating imported organic products, controlling epidemics, and overseeing and conducting health research. Within the U.S. Public Health Service are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Health Resources and Health Services Administration (HRHSA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Public Health Service originated in 1798 as a health service for merchant sailors, was formally established in 1870 as the Marine Hospital Service, and acquired its current name in 1912.
