Independent and privately funded research and educational organizations established to obtain, inter- pret, and disseminate knowledge about economic, political, and social issues. Many of these organizations publish journals and books, maintain libraries and speakers bureaus, and monitor the decision-making processes of governments and social institutions. Among the larger of these organizations are the Brookings Institution (founded in 1916), the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1910), the Hudson Institute (1961), the Cato Institute (1977), the Urban Institute (1968), the Center for Policy Alternatives (1975), and the Institute for Policy Studies (1963).
