In social work, the mutual emotional exchange; dynamic interaction; and affective, cognitive, and behavioral connection that exist between the social worker and the client to create the working and helping atmosphere. Social workers such as Felix Biestek (The Casework Relationship, Chicago: Loyola University Press, 1957) have found that it is created through adherence to certain ethical behaviors, including acceptance, confidentiality, individualization, and nonjudgmental view of the client, as well as permitting the client ultimate self- determination, purposeful expression of feelings, and controlled emotional involvement. The term "relationship" was first described for social workers by Virginia Robinson (A Changing Psychology in Social Casework, Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1930).
