A minor who has departed the home of his or her parents or legal guardians contrary to their wishes and who intends to remain independent of their control. The major program to help these youngsters and possibly reunite them with their parents is the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which maintains a free 24-hour daily hot line at 1-800-843-5678 (or 1-800-THE- LOST). Covenant House also maintains a free national hotline (called the Nineline) for runaways at 1-800-999-9999.
