Efforts and organizations that raise the consciousness of citizens and professionals about the problems of rural areas and advocate legislation to correct rural social problems. The movement grew in the 1970s and is now active in forging coalitions with the grassroots community. Some of the rural advocacy organizations include Rural America, the Rural Social Work Caucus, and the National Association for Rural Mental Health.
