எந்த ஒரு சங்கம், தன்னுடைய இருப்பை மறைக்காது, தன்னுடைய நிகழ்ச்சிகளையும், செயல்பாடுகளையும் தன்னுடைய உறுப்பினர்கள் அல்லாத பிறருடன் பகிர்ந்துகொள்ள நிபந்தனைகள் வைத்துள்ளதோ, அதை இரகசிய சங்கம் எனலாம். இரகசிய சங்கம் என்பதற்கான விளக்கத்தில் கருத்தொற்றுமை இல்லாவிட்டாலும், இரகசியமாகச் செயல்படும் போராளிக்குழுக்கள், தீவிரவாதக் குழுக்களை இரகசியச் சங்கங்கள் பட்டியலில் பொதுவாகச் சேர்ப்பதில்லை. பெரும்பாலான இரகசியச் சங்கங்கள் உறுப்பினர் விவரம், உறுப்பினரை அனுமதிக்கும் முறை, சங்கச் செயல்பாடுகள் போன்றவற்றை இரகசியமாகவே வைத்துள்ளன.

Organizations whose goals and procedures are kept from the general public. Some of these groups operate secretively as forms of elitism or social exclusivity. Others are secretive because they emphasize political ideologies or tactics deemed by the public to be threatening to society. Such groups include the Communist Party, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), the American Nazi Party, the Posse Comitatus, and The Order.
