Sexism என்ற சொல் இருபதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் மத்தியில் ஒரு பால் மற்றதை விட உயர்ந்தது, சிறப்பான திறன் கொண்டது, மதிக்கப்பட வேண்டியது என்ற எண்ணம் அல்லது நம்பிக்கையைக் குறிப்பிடுவதாக அமைந்துள்ளது. இது பிறபாலரிடையே பாகுபாடு காண்பதையும் உள்ளடக்கியது. மற்ற பாலரிடம் வெறுப்பு காட்டுவது, முன்தீர்வு கொள்வது என்பனவும், ஆண்களுக்கான பண்புகள் இவையெனவும், மகளிருக்கான பண்புகள் இவையெனவும் முன்மொழிதலும் பாலின வாதம் ஆகும். இது ஆணாதிக்கம் மற்றும் பெண்ணாதிக்கம் எனவும் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.
