sexual dysfunction

The inability of an individual or couple to experience sexual intercourse in a satisfactory way. The dysfunction refers to both objectively occurring deficits in an individual's sexual response cycle (in any part of the cycle including excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution) and to an individual's subjective dissatisfaction with his or her sexual response, even if it falls within the normal range. The cause of the dysfunction may be psychosocial or physical (including effects of disease, injuries, or medications) or a combination of both. The most prevalent types include orgasmic disorders, vaginismus, dyspareunia, erectile disorder, premature ejaculation, ejaculatory inhibition, sexual aversion disorder, and paraphilia.
