பொதுவான பிணைப்பினாலோ, சமமான சமூக அந்தஸ்தினாலோ, ஒரே மாதிரியான கடமைகளைச் செய்வதாலோ, சேர்ந்து செயல்புரிய வேண்டுமென்பதாலோ அல்லது ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட பிராந்தியத்தைச் சேர்ந்திருப்பதாலோ அல்லது கலாச்சாரத் தொடர்பினாலோ தனி நபர்களுக்கும் குழுக்களுக்கும் ஏற்படும் இணைப்பை சமூக வலைப்பின்னல் எனலாம். சமூக வலைப்பின்னல்களின் வடிவமும், ஆயுட்காலமும் ஒரே மாதிரியாய் இருப்பதில்லை. அது தேவைக்கேற்ற மாதிரி, பங்கெடுப்பவர்களின் ஆர்வத்திற்கு ஏற்ற மாதிரி, தற்காலிகமானதாகவோ அல்லது அதிக ஆயுள் கொண்டதாகவோ அமையலாம். சுய உதவிக் குழுக்கள், ஆதரவுக் குழுக்கள், பழைய மாணவர் குழுக்கள் என்று சமூக வலைப்பின்னல்கள் பலவகைப்படும்.
