தொழில்முறை சமூகப்பணியாளராக வேண்டி ஒரு சமூகப் பணியாளர் பெறும் முறையான கல்விப் பயிற்சியும், அதையொட்டியும், அதன்பின் பெறும் அனுபவங்களும் சமூகப்பணிக் கல்வியாகும். சமூகப்பணிக் கல்விக்குழுவால் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட கல்லூரியில் இளங்கலை அல்லது முதுகலையில் சமூகப்பணிப் பட்டமோ அல்லது ஆய்வுப் பட்டமோ பெறுவது சமூகப்பணியில் அடிப்படைப் பயிற்சியாகும். இந்த அடிப்படைப் பயிற்சியில் விரிவான வகுப்பறை போதனையும், அதோடிணைந்த அனுபவமிக்கவர்களின் நேரடிக் கண்காணிப்பில் செய்யப்படும் களப்பணியும் அடங்கும். பட்டம் பெறுவதோடு தங்களின் சமூகப்பணிக் கல்வி முழுமை பெறுவதாக சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் நினைப்பதில்லை. பட்டம் பெற்றபின் சமூகப்பணியாளர்கள் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காலம், அனுபவமிக்க மேற்பார்வையாளர்களின் கண்காணிப்பில் பணி அனுபவமும், அதன் பின் தங்கள் அறிவை இற்றைப்படுத்தலும் (continous update) வேண்டும்.

The formal training and subsequent experience that prepare social workers for their professional roles. The formal training takes place primarily in accredited colleges and universities at the baccalaureate social work (bachelor's degree in social work) level and in accredited professional schools of social work in MSW, DS W, PhD, and other doctoral programs. Social work education includes extensive classroom activity as well as direct supervised work with clients (field placement). Social workers do not consider their education to be completed only because they have acquired their degrees. On graduation, most social workers provide services under the supervision of more experienced colleagues and then take additional formal courses (continuing education).
