soft sciences

The name sometimes attached to less empirically based bodies of knowledge, including such social sciences as economics, psychology, and sociology. This is contrasted to what are called the "hard sciences", including such natural sciences as biology, chemistry, and physics. Social work is usually placed in the "soft science" category as an applied social science.
